I Have A Cool Idea! What Should I Do Next?

I'm excited that I have a business idea that could make a significant impact. My challenge stems not from a lack of enthusiasm or dedication but from the task of navigating the initial steps of starting a business. Where do I begin? How do I transform this idea into a tangible plan, secure funding, understand the legalities, and market my concept effectively?

Select this stage if you agree with any or all of the following:

  • I have a business idea but I need guidance on how to build it or bring it to fruition

  • I'm a professional and want to offer my skillset as a service. I just need to know what to do.

  • I don't yet have a clearly formed idea but I believe entrepreneurship is my path in life.

I Think I'm Ready To Sell My Product Or Service!

I've dedicated countless hours, iterating and refining, to ensure that the product or service not only meets but exceeds expectations! However, I am now confronted with a significant hurdle: the complexities of selling and marketing it effectively. I need help implementing strategies that will introduce it to the right audience and convince them of its value. My challenge is not just in reaching potential customers but in developing a compelling storytelling that resonates, creating demand, and strategically positioning my product or service in a competitive landscape.

Select this stage if you agree with any or all of the following:

  • I built a minimum viable product offer or I am offering a service but I have not yet received a significant amount of feedback from potential customers to determine exactly what my value proposition is and exactly why people would choose me over my competition (if any) or other ways of fixing this problem.

  • I can not yet complete the following statement using potential customers feedback to back this claim: "My offer is for (target customers) who (need something, want something, or are not satisfied with something), (your brand name) offers (a service or solution) that provides (key benefits). Unlike (other competitors or solutions), that lack (pain points), (your brand name) offers (unique reason to buy or use it)"

  • I have not yet interviewed enough potential customers to segment them into different customer personas.

  • I have not yet legally formed my corporation.

I Already Have A Few Customers! Now I Need More!

I have reached a milestone where my product/service is not only in the market but is also beginning to gain traction with customers. I find myself faced with a new set of challenges. I realize that digital marketing, social media strategies, content marketing, partnerships, and other ways to gain more customers are each channels that require a nuanced understanding and strategic approach to engage effectively with different audiences.

Select this stage if you agree with any or all of the following:

  • I built a minimum viable product offer or I am offering a service and I have received a significant amount of feedback from potential customers. I know exactly what my value proposition is and can articulate why people choose me over my competition.

  • I can complete the following statement using potential customer feedback to back this claim: "My offer is for (target customers) who (need something, want something, or are not satisfied with something), (your brand name) offers (a service or solution) that provides (key benefits). Unlike (other competitors or solutions), that lack (pain points), (your brand name) offers (unique reason to buy or use it)"

  • I have interviewed enough potential customers to segment them into different customer personas.

  • I have selected my target customer persona and I have enough information about them to justify why they are a perfect fit for my offer.

  • I have legally formed my corporation.

  • I have mapped my customer journey and buying process from awareness to closed sale

  • I have estimated my total addressable market size and my total addressable market size and current service obtainable market sizes.

  • I have created a go-to-market strategy

.

  • I am in the process of refining and confirming that my go-to-market strategy can continue to produce new customers consistently through the replication of sales and marketing efforts.

  • I have calculated and confirmed my total addressable market size, my total addressable market size, and my current service obtainable market sizes.

  • I  have an idea of what my customer acquisition costs are but I could use help accurately calculating my customer acquisition, the lifetime value of each customer, and my weighted average cost of capital (WACC).

I'm Ready To Bring On Investors Now!

At this stage, the guidance of a mentor or a business advisor who has successfully navigated the path of scaling a business to a national or global market would be invaluable. I need help managing growth and practical advice on avoiding common mistakes. I believe that bringing on the right investment partner could provide access to a wealth of experience, resources, and networks that can provide perspectives on optimizing operations, financial planning for growth, and how to sustainably expand the customer base while preserving the essence of what made the product successful in the first place.

Select this stage if you agree with any or all of the following:

  • I need more capital to not just fulfill orders but also to expand the team, enhance marketing efforts, and/or possibly upgrade technology and infrastructure to support the increased business activity.

  • I need to grow quickly and efficiently to capitalize on the current momentum and meet customer expectations.

  • I  know my customer acquisition costs, the lifetime value of each customer, and my weighted average cost of capital (WACC).

  • I have created a business plan and have completed my financial projections for the future for the next 3-5 years. I can explain detailed specifics about how I estimated my projections.
